Miller, working with Han and other researchers, delved into national poison control data. They found that before 2021, poison control centers handled around 1,000 to 1,500 GLP-1RA-related cases annually. However, after mid-2021, this number nearly doubled, and by 2023, it had skyrocketed to over 8,000 calls. Most of these incidents were due to accidental overdosing or therapeutic mistakes, rather than intentional misuse.
A Clear Turning Point
The research team's analysis revealed a clear turning point: the FDA's approval of semaglutide for weight management. The nature and volume of poison control calls changed significantly after this approval, indicating the drug's expanded use beyond diabetic patients to a broader population seeking weight loss. Han emphasized the need to educate the public about the drug's behavior in the body and its long-term safety, which is still not fully understood.
Preventable Mistakes and Education
Many of the poison control cases could have been avoided with better patient education. Semaglutide is designed for weekly injections, not daily, and the dosage is meant to be increased gradually over time. However, common mistakes included taking the medication daily and starting with the highest dose immediately. Improving education at every stage of the prescribing process could significantly reduce these medication errors.
